Finding balance within is essential for reaching our full potential, achieving our goals and really understanding who we are. Practicing meditation improves our use of the right side of our brain – the side of our brain responsible for creativity and the arts. Most of the daily tasks we perform are to do with logic; these functions use the left side of our brain. By meditating we naturally improve our right-side functions and find more balance within ourselves and in our lives.
What is Meditation?
Meditation is the practice of sitting comfortably and focusing on your breath for a sustained period of anywhere from 3 minutes to an hour. By doing so, we take our minds focus away from rumination, concentration and intentional thinking – effectively giving our mind a rest.
During a meditation practice, our brain waves change and a higher level of theta can be found in the front and middle parts of the brain, alpha waves increase in the posterior parts. Theta brain waves are associated with monitoring mental processes, calm and physical relaxation while alpha waves are characteristic of wakeful rest.
Continued practice helps us to become more aware of our inner experiences and thoughts along with a host of other mental, spiritual and physical benefits.
The Benefits of Meditation
Improved Sleep is one of the many benefits of meditation. The ability to turn your mind away from hectic thoughts of work or problems you can’t act upon at that moment allows it to relax and prepare for a night of rest. As well as giving you the ability to rest you mind, in doing so you create a relaxation response in your body too – perfect for getting to sleep and remaining in slumber until you are fully rested.
Happiness The ability to process thoughts calmly, release stress and negativity, unsurprisingly, makes us happier! By taking the time to relax your mind, you also allow yourself to change perspective, give yourself space and look at the bigger picture. By pulling back from daily stresses with a clear and calm mind we become happier and more peaceful people.
Be present Meditation teaches us to let go of distractions and focus on a single task. This leads to better focus, awareness, heightened productivity and the ability to achieve our goals. When we remain in the moment and slow down, we actually achieve more.
Make better decisions Some decisions can be difficult. Whether it’s to take the new job or where to go on holiday, meditation can help us to clear the mind in order to focus on the information we have as well as how we really feel about a particular choice so that we can make the right one for us, in that moment.
Enhance creativity Clearing our mental chatter and improving our ability to let our mind be free, improves creativity – even if you’ve never meditated before, you’ll find new ideas and creative solutions come easier after a meditation session.
How to start meditating
Getting started is easy. There are multiple free guided meditation resources available on the internet and we have recommended meditations on soundcloud too. Simply commit to 15 – 20 minutes each morning or evening and give yourself the distraction-free space you need.
Meditation has multiple benefits for our mental, spiritual and physical health. Choosing to access these benefits and create positive change in your life is as simple as making a little time for yourself each day.
